Dive Against the Debris
Don't let your dives go to waste.
For more than a year now, 7SEAS has offered a free weekly clean-up dive to all certified divers. We supply the equipment and guides, certified divers show up and do their part to keep our ocean clean! Each week we would bring bags of garbage out of the ocean and, in some small way, give back to the beautiful ocean that we all enjoy every day!
In May, however, we decided we needed to do something more. Instead of a “clean-up dive” where garbage is collected, we started to conduct a weekly Dive Against Debris. With DAD, not only do we remove debris on a weekly basis, but we collect data about what garbage we find, submit that to Project AWARE, and our weekly good deed continues to contribute long into the future!
What many people don’t realize is that there is so much more to a Dive Against Debris than just collecting ocean waste. After the dive, our staff weighs all of the garbage collected, and then sorts it into 100 different categories (plastics, wood, glass, etc.). This data is submitted online to Project AWARE every week and used to initiate change through local governments or NGOs.
For more than 6 months now we have been submitting weekly (sometimes more) data to Project AWARE in hopes of making changes in Indonesian plastic use and waste management.
Thanks to all of the volunteers in the past 6 months and thanks in advance to those volunteers to come!!
